Taking a Poll

So I just want to try something because I'm curious.

How many people think that it is the man's job to lock the doors and shut off all the lights every night?
Who thinks it doesn't matter?
And how many have mother's who always did it?

You see, Richard and I have this debate every once in a while in our relationship. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a big issue at all, and I still love him (even though you can probably tell we don't have the same opinion on this). I grew up where my dad is always the one who did this sort of thing. Richard grew up, where I guess, it didnt' really matter and it wasn't a big deal (Gardner's correct me if I'm wrong about this). So for me, when i have to be the one to turn out the lights because he didn't even consider it?!!! for some reason, its a big deal. So I have a very strong feeling about this (especially since I've been pregnant :-)) and just want to know what people think about this, or if other couples have discussed this before.

(Now please no one take me the wrong way, this is not an issue that matters for life, and I still love Richard very much. ) Just Curious

My dad always shut off the lights and locked the door growing up as well. Now that we are married, Tim usually checks to make sure the door is locked at night. I think we both turn off the lights. That is an interesting question though. Isn't it funny how different one is raised from their spouse? I always tell Tim that getting the car fixed is the man's job (that is taking it to the car shop!)

ahah - this is funny - I guess that I start turning lights off while tim makes sure the doors are locked. When he finishes, he grabs the last few lights on his way to bed :)

So, since I'm your mother, you already know what I think about this and my vote probably doesn't count (as far as Richard is concerned!!!!:-)) - BUT, to me, it's just another "sense of security" that my husband can give me -what of those "needs" of a woman. Knowing that he checks everything before he comes to bed, helps make me feel secure!:-)

It's not an issue for us at all. We hardly ever check to make sure the doors are locked (I'm not sure if that's because we feel safe in our neighborhood or because Jordan has a gun by the bed that he wouldn't mind using! Haha!). As far as turning out lights, we just turn them off as we go...and somehow they all end up getting turned off! ;)

the husband should do it. BUT.... I am scared of the dark, so that factors in a big part of it. :)

I grew up where my step-dad did all the "locking" up in the house, too. And I suppose I sorta expect that from Mike. I guess I do get somewhat "bothered" if he walks up the stairs w/o turning off our hall light. But at the same time, I just figure we have an unspoken understanding that the last person in the room turns off the light. We also think that if YOU don't turn it off, then I will, and that's OK. That seems to work for us.

And now that I think about it, I guess Mike DOES check the lock at night to see if it's locked. But we've never discussed it.

Maybe some guys, as they get older, become more aware of their "man of the house" duties. I don't know. Maybe once that baby is here, he'll starting thinking like that. Or maybe, it'll stay the same.

I guess if it really bothers you, keep talking to him about it (in a sweet and non-confrontal sort of way).
